Health and Diet – Things to consider

What is the link between health and food and how relevant is the environment to your green smoothie?

There is a lot of information available about what to eat or not to eat to keep healthy, something new and fancy seems to pop up every month.

Eating and keeping healthy seems to be a bit of a science in itself, with different schools of thought focusing on different things such as the pH value of food, whether to eat carbs, protein, butter vs. margarine, transfats and so on.

Contextualise

The key will often be to contextualise the advice. The internet is flooded with health information and advice that derive from individual agendas and commercial interests. I am not going to comment on any as tomorrow you will read about the next great health agenda.

What is most important for everyone at any time is to eat a varied diet that will help maintain a healthy gut flora which in turn will assist you to be able to digest what food is available

I am not going to tell you what to eat. Certainly, what is available and what is advisable will vary anyway from country to country as well as depend on your way of life and your physical and mental constitution.

To me it is much more important to impress on people’s minds that we are approaching a time at an alarming rate when the issue will not be WHAT you eat and drink but IF you have anything to eat and drink. What is most important for everyone at any time is to eat a varied diet that will help maintain a healthy gut flora which in turn will assist you to be able to digest what food is available.

It is more important for your health to keep a kitchen garden and grow what you need. You can even have an agreement with a local farmer for some fresh produce rather than rely on what supplements and food you can get from the supermarket or a health food store.

Climate

To dream of a long and healthy life is a marvellous thought but unfortunately is fast becoming unrealistic as our living in the world becomes increasingly affected by climate change and mass migration. Within a relatively short span of time, the focus will have to change from whether something is healthy to eat to who will eat the food that is available and how will you protect yourself from those who will attempt to get what you have.test-demonstration-qatar

Food and water security

Desalination plants

The focus today should more appropriately be on food and water security and on counter acting deforestation and desertification. Large scale desalination plants can help food production in arid areas and counteract the extension of desert areas. Joakim Hauge and the Sahara Forest Project is using sea water and solar energy to grow food in Quatar and Jordan – these sort of projects need to go mainstream and large scale. Let us see solar energy replace the need to burn wood. Let us see investment in sanitation.

Toilet technology

The Bill Gates Foundation estimates that 40 percent of the world’s population do not have access to adequate sanitary facilities. For these people, this means disease, high mortality and loss of productivity. The focus for the transformative technologies projects, i.e. toilets, is the third world but let’s not only look so far away. Let’s face the fact that incredible amounts of potable water is being flushed down drains in the first world and the only thing needed to change that is a change in attitudes because for us the technology is already here.

Composting toilets can be installed in most houses and apartments. Our buildings need to suit our climate, not rely on excessive air-conditioning and heating. The knowledge is there but it is not finding its way into new building codes around the world. People ignorantly want to live like they always lived. How about building greenhouses on the façades of buildings to feed those who live there.

The business of war is also a top priority, something few will make a living from but many will die from. What is life sustaining is down prioritised and destroyed

Tradition vs. climate

Why do we think it is culturally excusable that indigenous people graze bony cows for the main purpose of status in land areas that cannot sustain it, causing deforestation and desertification. Short term perspective and profits are allowed by politicians to overshadow knowledge and most people are allowed to live in ignorance. The business of war is also a top priority, something few will make a living from but many will die from. What is life sustaining is down prioritised and destroyed.

Mind over matter

When it comes to your everyday choices and all the information coming to you about what is healthy, just remember that first and foremost, it is mind over matter. I have friends that have eaten themselves to physical and psychological disease by focusing on all these details they are being assaulted with.

I know unhappy people who have died from serious diseases despite following every health advice out there because they never solved their own personal riddles. I also know people who lived until a grand old age despite neglecting their health their whole life and they lived happily all their days. There are so many factors other than food that decides one’s health and wellbeing.

Solve your personal riddles and you will be half-way there.Fruit_Tree_Branches_clip_art_hight
